3 ways to be courageous
Courage is not the absence of fear but acting despite fear. Courage is something that most of us don’t have when it comes to doing the things that makes us afraid. Be it quitting our jobs and going after what you really want or going after that person of your dreams or trying out a new hobby.
Most people are afraid of failure and would rather not try than to try and be laughed at and humiliated.
Granted, it is difficult to try something new especially when that thing is out of our normal sphere of familiarity. We are afraid we will fail and if something or someone pushes us to make that plunge and we end up failing, it makes us even more afraid to try something else thinking we would fail at that too.
But failure is a part of life and we must be willing to fail to move forward in life and that requires on no small part form us, courage.
Develop the Courage to Act
We must develop the courage to act in spite of fear, to take the plunge even when all things and people around us are saying we can’t do it or we would fail. Your success in life depends greatly on your ability to be courageous.
For instance, I am a sport person and I have never shied away from doing anything sporty even if I have never attempted that sport before. Because sport is about moving your body rigorously and having to some extent, a great deal of hand-eye coordination, which I have been doing since I was a kid, so I didn’t have a problem trying out a new sport. Even if at first I wasn’t good at it, I always got okay in no time.
But when I decided to start my online business, I was scared to pieces. I remember trying to launch the website and my whole body was shaking so much I had to postpone it, go out for a long walk before finally launching the site (I was nineteen at the time).
I had always been told how good I was at things, except schooling, and now trying out this new thing that people around me knew nothing about, and sucking at it would just be a great blow for me. But I kept at it and now I’m doing it and doing it well.
So it would be tough at first trying out something new but if you keep at it, you will get better. Practice makes perfect and in no time at all, you will become one of the best at it.
Tools you will need in other to become more courageous in life:
Procrastination is not only the killer of destiny and dreams, it is also the killer of courage. When you want to do something, especially new, you go for it. Sometimes your heart beat will become faster and you would be stuck for hours or even days but you will do it. Don’t let the fear of the unknown stop you from fulfilling your potentials.
Use the “What’s the Worst that could Happen” (WTWTCH) analogy.
When you are scared of starting something, use the WTWTCH analogy. For instance, if you are scared of starting a business, look at it this way, if you don’t start your business you will remain in financial imbalance, you will still have financial troubles which will have a bad impact on your health and relationships.
Look at it in the long run, in a year from now, in five years, in ten years, when you are successful, do you think you’ll look back at this moment and say to yourself, “that was the best decision I ever made”? if so, do it now.
If you think of it this way, you will notice that the fear you had today has reduced and it will be easier to start that business.
Start doing things that makes you scared
Isn’t that what life is about? Living? You feel more alive when you do something you know makes you scared. Try out that new and fancy restaurant you didn’t have the guts to try because you thought they are too “fancy” and you wouldn’t want to embarrass yourself.
Try that new sport. Go on a hike. Go on a date with that person, ask that girl out and ask that boy out. Do something that excites you and you will notice that you are becoming more courageous and others will notice that in you and your life generally will become better.
I like this statement in a movie and I really liked it, “Courage is fear that has said its prayers“.
